open questions: geneder and cc?

Sat Apr 25, 2009, 11:29 AM
these are open questions, meaning that anyone can answer. it is not meant to confuse or insult anyone

* how much do you guys take gender into consideration when creating and developing characters (for games, literature, etc)?
* at what point in the development of the character do you decide a gender?
* do you strickly follow male/female? or do you blur the line that's put there?

depends on the character actually. but i decide right from the beginning whether or not its going to be a male or female character. it helps me work out any other background story that i plan on working together for that specific character.

what do you mean by "strictly follow male/female?" thats pretty vague. elaborate?

that's cool. i try and leave the gender question till whenever it pops into my head. It could be at the beginning, could be at the end. In doing this, i hope to avoid role-casting my character based on the gender (s)he is.

I also like to included attributes, likes/dislikes, etc that aren't necessarily "appropriate" according to society, like a dancing boy or a gunslinger girl.

by strictly male/female i mean the roles, likes/dislikes and other stuff society associates with gender. i am looking for ways of defining characters either independent or a variant of typical roles for

Gunslinger girl, boy dancer, intersex actor. they are all possibilities.

thats extremely old fashioned and kind of closed minded IMHO to keep to gender roles. unless youre going for that with a certain character, then by all means, keep it gender specific.

but otherwise, you seem to have the right idea with the examples youve listed. a lot have been done before, its just finding a new and interesting way of tweaking that same idea
